Last weekend saw this year’s highly anticipated FACE conference at the Royal College of Physician’s, London, and Micro-Medical Skin-Needling was once again a key topic on the agenda. The conferences clinical programme featured lectures and seminars from many of the finest international medical aesthetic physicians and surgeons including the UK’s Dr Robin Stones. Dr Stones ; a Specialist Doctor in Dermatology, Cosmetic Physician and Medical Director of Court House Clinics, made a presentation on Micro-medical skin-needling in medical aesthetics – current, emerging and future indications and treatments. Dr Stones has worked in private cosmetic practice for the past 13 years and in NHS dermatology practice for 25 years. He has a special interest in dermatological laser procedures and is a tutor and examiner in this field. He believes in a holistic approach to skin and facial rejuvenation, often combining conventional dermatological and aesthetic treatments and micro-medical skin-needling has become a key part of his practice in recent years. He has spoken at numerous conferences on various aspects of cosmetic practice.

Dr Stones began by giving an overview of the history of the micro-needling procedure, from its use as a ‘subcision’ technique where the fibrotic bands beneath tethered scars are ‘subcised’ to release the scar, to the development of a medical-device roller with multiple micro-medical skin-needles to stimulate collagen production and skin regeneration. He described the technique itself and discussed the current indications for micro-medical skin-needling, namely acne scarring, ageing and photo-damaged skin, using data and images from clinical studies and practice to demonstrate the success in these areas so far.

Dr Stones stated the importance of using sterile medical devices that carry a bona-fide CE mark and that he used the Genuine Dermaroller™ medical devices because of their quality and regulatory compliance.

He then spoke about two developing indications for micro-medical skin-needling: stretch marks and trauma scars. Stretch marks are a common problem and a notoriously difficult problem to treat; Dr Stones presented his own and other case studies in which patients had an excellent improvement in their stretch marks after a course of Genuine Dermaroller™ treatments, and how these results needed to encourage further studies to demonstrate the reproducibility of these results. Two recent papers on the treatment of hypertrophic burn scars and inactive keloid scars also showed how great a benefit the treatment can provide to serious clinical conditions and again how the good results that can be obtained in this area were encouraging further clinical developments and studies.

To finish, Dr Stones discussed what can be expected in the future for micro-needling which is what many practitioners we know have been using for some time: combination treatments.
He reviewed the opportunity for protocols combining micro-needling techniques radiofrequency for enhanced results and his own protocols where he combines Genuine Dermaroller™ Therapy™ with light therapy and with hyaluronic acid and how the latter is an ideal candidate for combination therapies due to its hydrating and volumising properties and referred to a protocol for facial rejuvenation used by The Cosmetic Skin Clinic’s Dr Tracy Mountford. Eagle eyed readers will also recall that a combination of Hyaluronic Acid and Genuine Dermaroller Therapy was used recently by Dr Jonquille Chantrey on Embarrassing Bodies – Diagnosis Live.

Dr Jonquille Chantrey of the Expert Aesthetics Clinic in Cheshire performed Genuine Dermaroller™ Therapy™ on her patient Marcia as part of a series of treatments for severe acne scarring. Marcia had acne from the age of nine and was treated using a combination treatment that Dr Jonquille has pioneered and calls The Microlift. Due to the fantastic results she has been achieving, Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies – Diagnosis Live approached Dr Chantrey to showcase this treatment on the programme so that more people suffering with acne scarring are able to understand the treatment options available to them.

The Microlift procedure is a safe, non-invasive procedure that has minimal downtime. It stimulates new skin regeneration and repair to existing scars and the surrounding skin. This results in a smoother, more even toned appearance and a healthier complexion. Scars appear less deep and less noticeable. Dramatic results can be seen over a period of months, often in scars that have been resistant to other treatment methods. Marcia is already pleased with the outcome and has noticed that her skin appears more plumped up, and she is expecting to see full results after her fourth session with the treatment.

The Microlift Procedure has 4 steps:
1. Subcision
Fine needles are used to gently break down the scarring & loosen them from the deeper tissues.

2. Injection of Hyaluronic Acid Mesotherapy (eg Juvederm® Hydrate, Restylane® Vital®, Teosyal Meso®)
Hyaluronic Acid is naturally found in the skin. It provides hydration; supports and plumps the scars.

3. Genuine Dermaroller™ Therapy™ Dermastamp Medical Microneedling
A medical microneedling device is used to specifically target certain scars. This stimulates regeneration of the skin with new cell production and blood supply to the scars.

4. Genuine Dermaroller™ Therapy™ Medical Microneedling
A medical microneedling device is used to treat the whole area (eg face, neck chest, back). It creates many tiny injuries to the skin, stimulating the skin to repair itself and regenerate new collagen.  As the whole area is treated, the skin overall appears smoother, stronger and healthier.

Treatments are 6 – 8 weeks apart for the full Microlift Procedure. However, most patients benefit from sessions of the Hyaluronic Acid Mesotherapy in between sessions. Most patients can return to work or normal, non-strenuous activity almost immediately. Redness is common for 24hours. Bruising and swelling can occur but is uncommon and rarely lasts longer than 48hours.

May saw Genuine Dermaroller’s appearance at this year’s highly anticipated Cosmetic News Expo at the Business Design Centre in London.  Medical Aesthetic practitioners travelled from all over the UK for the meeting and were amongst the first to experience the fantastic new range of AesthetiCare® and Genuine Dermaroller™ Therapy™ products

The Expo’s clinical programme featured lectures from many of the UK’s finest medical aesthetic physicians and surgeons including the leading Cosmetic Surgeon & Facial Aesthetics Expert Miss Jonquille Chantrey who readers of the blog will have previously seen performing Genuine Dermaroller™ Therapy™ on Embarrassing Bodies and the Jeremy Kyle Surgery Special.  Miss Chantrey of Expert Aesthetics Clinic, Alderley Edge, Cheshire spoke to a packed conference auditorium on the subject of Micro-Medical Skin-Needling and how it can be effective at treating scarring.

Dr Chantrey spoke about how scarring is a natural response to injury and trauma to the skin and can take the form of atrophic (often occurring after severe acne), hypertrophic (raised and within the area of the injury) and keloid (excessive tissue growth) scars and emphasised the importance of identifying the type of scar the patient has to ensure that it is treated appropriately.  This is particularly important when treating hypertrophic scars and keloid scars, the latter should only ever performed by specialists and only when non-active.

She also stated that stretch marks can be considered as a scar and cited research from the USA that describes how on average 70% of adolescent females and 40% of adolescent males suffer from scarring in the form of stretch marks and that this can rise up to 90% in the case of pregnant women.

Miss Chantrey went on to say that the classic treatments available for scarring included surgical, biophysical and pharmacological techniques but that they all have limitations and few have more than 50% efficacy. However non-surgical Micro-Medical Skin-Needling treatments using high quality medical devices was now becoming increasingly established as an efficacious treatment of scars with an excellent safety profile. The controlled physical skin repair mechanism stimulated a repair mechanism that produced normalized skin tissue and collagen that can improve the physiological condition and appearance of the scar.

The numerous advantages of the method included:
●   No need for general anaesthesia
●   Minimal post-procedure pain or downtime
●   Excellent safety profile including minimal infection and pigmentation risks
●   Procedure can be repeated until a satisfactory result is achieved
●   High efficacy to cost ratio

She finished by concluding that recent clinical studies and practice that have established micro-medical skin-needling as an effective first-line treatment for acne scars, and increasingly stretch marks and hypertrophic scars and very interesting work was being conducted by specialists on inactive keloid scars but insisted on caution and specialist only treatment of the latter. Photos illustrating these points are below.

In the last Genuine Dermaroller™ blog we discussed leading cosmetic physician Dr Sach Mohan’s appearance on Look and Feel Younger.tv speaking about what’s hot in the world of anti-ageing. The second video where Sach demonstrates the Genuine Dermaroller™ technique is now live on the site and also in the audio and video section on this website.

In this second video Sach begins by speaking about what the Dermaroller is and how effective it can be in reducing lines, wrinkles, stretch marks and scarring.  He then goes on to treat his patient Kate who as a 49 year old was looking to improve the look of her lines and radiance on the face. Kate goes on to explain how much she’s looking forward to the procedure before Sach takes over the commentary as her treatment continues.

The video clearly shows the process of Dermaroller whilst Sach educates us on the history of medical micro-needling and the aftercare process to ensure the best results are achieved. He also explained the importance of visiting a fully qualified medical practitioner and using only Genuine Dermaroller™ products.

Readers of the Genuine Dermaroller blog will be familiar with Dr Sach Mohan, leading cosmetic physician and non-surgical clinical lead at the Transform Group. Sach also provides advice and opinion to Genuine Dermaroller™and AesthetiCare® to ensure our training and clinical information is up to date.  Sach has recently appeared as a medical-cosmetic expert in two exclusive videos on Look and Feel Younger.tv, the premier anti-ageing site where you can find out all you need to know about looking good and feeling your best.

The site is the brain-child of anti-ageing expert Nicky Hambleton-Jones who having presented Channel 4’s Ten Years Younger for five series, wanted to offer tips and advice on the ageing process.  Sach spoke to Nicky about what’s hot in the world of anti-ageing, and gave us a great insight into the world of non-invasive treatments.

For the first video Sach told us that the trend is to now move away from trying to achieve high cheekbones and a frozen face towards a much more natural look where it could be argued that no work had been done at all.  He advised that to get the best out of any cosmetic treatment then it’s important for you to manage expectations and that it’s also helpful to offer your physician a baseline from which to work. He suggested that this could be a photo of yourself from 3 to 4 years ago to illustrate the look you are trying to achieve, and that you can also refer to when assessing your results.

He also re-iterated the importance of a good skincare regime from very young and that the best products to use would be an evidence based cosmecutical or dermo-cosmetic range. You can find out more information on the excellent variety of cosmecuticals from AesthetiCare® including Endocare and Heliocare on www.aestheticare.co.uk.

Sach also let us know his thoughts on the future of anti-ageing and new developments in the industry, but you’re going to have to watch the full video by clicking on the link below to gain that knowledge as we’re not giving away everything on here!

Following on from her very successful appearance performing Genuine Dermaroller™ Therapy™ on the Jeremy Kyle show, Aesthetic Surgeon Dr Jonquille Chantrey is back featuring on Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies.

Dr Chantrey of The Private Clinic in Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham performed Genuine Dermaroller™ Therapy™ on her patient Vicky as part of a series of treatments for acne scarring. Vicky was also treated by Dr Jonquille for active acne using NLite and an explanation of the careful use of Dermaroller in this case is below.

“We would NEVER Dermaroller in active acne areas as it’s clearly very obvious that bacterial spread could occur.  The mechanism of action of NLite is to reduce bacterial surface count so this would defeat the objective.  This was explained clearly in filming but was edited out.  Ideally a full course of NLite would have been completed prior to this.  The patient had Dermaroller to her forehead only, which was not active but severely scarred.  She had Dermastamp to very deep acne scars in her lower third which were selected out away from any bacterial activity. Unfortunately the filming was amalgamated which may have made the treatment process unclear but I’d like to reassure everyone that she is delighted with her results to date and is still awaiting her final Dermaroller treatments.”

You’ll all be pleased to know that you can now watch the video in the Video and Audio section of the site, or you can view it below.

Dr Chantrey has very kindly agreed to keep us updated on all future treatments that Vicky has so do look out for further posts.

Face the Future Clinic in Leeds has been successfully using Genuine Dermaroller in their clinic and invited one of their patients, Gemma Marsden, to write a blog about her experience. Below is the full re-production of an article that originally appeared on www.facethefuture.co.uk

Diary of Dermaroller Treatment for Stretch Marks

Stretching and causing trauma to the skin cause stretch marks. This means that we lose collagen and elastin leaving the red / purple marks and indentations in the skin. Generally over time the red / purple marks fades and we are generally left with the damaged skin.

Genuine Dermaroller is a roller with small needles covering it. During treatment it is rolled over the skin. This process gently traumatises the skin and encourages the fibroblast cells to produce new collagen and elastin to repair the skin damage. The skin regenerates itself every 6 weeks therefore this is about the time you would notice the best improvement after a Dermaroller treatment. The amount of sessions needed would depend on severity of the stretch marks. Most clients notice a good improvement after one session.

To tell you more about an experience with the Dermaroller for stretch marks, one of our clients has kindly put together a diary on the treatment, take a read below:

Most people have heard of Dermaroller for issues with the facial area but for me the part of my body that bothered me the most was stretch marks. I’m 21 years old and never had children but the stretch marks appeared on my breasts at around 16.

I never thought they could be removed but after visiting Face the Future and having a free consultation with the nurse I was informed that the most effective treatment would be Genuine Dermaroller. I had heard of Dermaroller before for the treatment of wrinkles on the face or for acne scarring, and was enthusiastic (and slightly apprehensive) that this could be the treatment for me.

Day 1 (Treatment Day):
On the day of treatment I arrived at the clinic and firstly had a topical anaesthetic applied to the area. This was left on my skin for around half hour to ensure maximum benefits. The depth of the needle on the roller also depends on the severity of the stretch marks and also your preference. The depths of the needles come in 1.5mm and 2.5mm.

As it was my first treatment I had the 1.5mm, as I was slightly nervous, however for my second treatment I’m going all the way with the 2.5mm Dermaroller. After the numbing crème had taken its effect the nurse came back into the room to carry out the treatment. She rolled the roller over the specific areas I wanted treating concentrating more on the deeper stretch marks. It was uncomfortable but bearable. The whole treatment lasted around 20 minutes and I was fine to drive home afterwards.

Day 2:
The day after treatment the area was quite red and inflamed but only felt like slight sunburn. The nurse in the clinic gave me some crème to use on it to calm down the area and also stop any infection. Whilst in clinic I purchased the home use Dermaroller Beauty Mouse, which is a home care Dermaroller and used this with a product called Essentia A by Environ. The aim of the beauty mouse is to roll over the skin to make small puncture marks invisible to the eye. This means that the application of vitamin A will penetrate the skin more enabling it to encourage the skins repair system to work.

Day 3:
The treated area is very slightly red but almost back to normal.

After 6 weeks I returned to the Clinic for a review and to look at my before pictures. I could see a significant difference from the before picture and cannot wait to have further treatment.

If anyone out there has stretch marks and is looking for a solution, I would highly recommend contacting Face the Future.”
